THE ORDER OF HONOURS

NORTH-EAST INTERDISCIPLINARY
SCIENCE RESEARCH INSTITUTE
OF THE RUSSIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
FAR EAST BRANCH

North-East Interdisciplinary Science Research Institute (SVKNII) has been the first academic institution in the North-East of Russia. In compliance with the decision of the USSR Academy of Sciences Presidium, it was established on March 4, 1960, as a filial of the Siberian Branch; this establishment project was aimed at solving many fundamental and area-specific research problems in the fields of geology, geophysics, economics, history and archeology.
Academician N.A.Shilo, an outstanding researcher and scientist, who initiated the establishment of the Institute, was his first director, and, at present, he is the Honored Director of SVKNII Institute.
Since 1960, the directors of the Institute have been:
Nikolai Alekseevich Shilo, the Academician of Russia Academy of Sciences, Research Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, University Professor, 1960-1985;
Anatoly Alekseevich Sidorov, the Corresponding Member of Russia Academy of Sciences, Research Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, University Professor, 1985-1994;
Vladislav Ivanovich Goncharov, the Academician of Russia Academy of Sciences, Research Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, University Professor, 1994-2003.
Nowadays, SVKNII Institute has been one of the leading academic institutions in the Far East of Russia. The Institute personnel consists of skilled and high-qualified researchers and specialists, including geologists, geophysicists, geographers, archeologists, economists, mathematicians, physicists and chemists, which are ready to meet any scientific challenge and to solve research problems using the modern up-to-date equipment and instruments.

The Institute basic research trends are as follows:

- Geology, geophysics and geodynamics of sedimentation areas; endogenic and exogenic processes over the continent-to-ocean transition throughout the Northern Pacific and Arctic;
- The laws of distribution, geology and genesis of mineral deposits over the Pacific Mobile Belt;
- The history of the North-East of Russia since the ancient time through the present; the social and environmental problems of the North.

The Institute collaborators have acquired a wide and unique experience in conducting regional geological studies, investigating the sea areas world-wide, studying mineral deposits of gold, silver, platinum, tin and stratiform base metals, also in conducting archeological studies and social-economic investigations in the North-East of Russia.
The Institute scientists work in collaboration with their colleagues from Russia, European countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, China and Japan. In 1996-2005, the international research studies were conducted at the Institute under six long-term joint projects.
The study results obtained by SVKNII researchers are constantly reported at conferences and international symposia. SVKNII Institute has hosted many scientific meetings, conferences and symposia, and provided for geological excursions over the North-East of Russia under the programs of the 14th Pacific Congress (1979), the 26th International Geological Congress (1984), the International Arctic Conferences (1992, 1994) and the International Symposium “Tectonics, Geodynamics and Metallogeny of the Northern Pacific” (2004).
In compliance with the USSR Supreme Council Presidium’s Decree, May 29, 1981, North-East Interdisciplinary Science Research Institute of the Russia Academy of Sciences Far East Branch, in consideration of its research merits and successes in training young scientists, was awarded   the Order of Honors. Many Institute scientists and specialists were also awarded medals and orders.
The Institute scientists V.F.Bely, R.A.Eryomin, N.E.Savva, A.A.Sidorov, K.V.Simakov and V.I.Goncharov are awarded the USSR Academy of Sciences prizes.
Since its establishment, SVKNII Institute is allowed to publish the scientific works and papers. By present, the obtained research results are presented in more than 240 monographs, several thousand papers and hundreds of reports.
Since 1960, 55 theses for the Research Professor’s degree and more than 200 theses for the Doctor’s degree have been successfully defended by the Institute researchers.
The Institute has its own Dissertation Council (Д.005.015.01), at which the researchers not only from Magadan Region but from other areas of the Russian Far East as well can pass the thesis defense procedure on geology. The Institute scientists are the experts of the Governor’s Innovation Council.
Fifteen scientists and specialists of SVKNII Institute teach and lecture at Magadan University and Institutes and try to make the best students interested in research activities.
Since 2002, the post-graduate students can enter the Institute Post-Graduate Courses. At present, there are 12 post-graduate students at SVKNII Institute.
On March 31, 2006, the number of the Institute workers was 252 including 10 Research Professors, 32 Doctors of Science and 77 researchers.
